Medical Nursing: Frequently Asked Questions

Clinical answers to the questions families ask most often before booking a home nursing visit.

What is in-home nursing care?

In-home nursing care is skilled clinical care delivered by a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in your home. It covers tasks that require a clinical license, such as IV therapy, complex wound care, injections, catheter and ostomy care, and post-surgical monitoring.

What is the difference between an RN, LPN, and a personal support worker?

RNs and LPNs are licensed clinicians who can perform medical tasks like injections, IV therapy, and wound care. Personal Support Workers (PSWs) and Health Care Assistants (HCAs) provide hands-on personal care, companionship, and daily living support but cannot perform clinical procedures.

Do I need a doctor's referral for home nursing?

Not always. We can start nursing services with a self-referral and obtain the necessary orders from your physician on your behalf. For some procedures and most insurance claims, a physician's order is required, and we coordinate that for you.

Are your nurses licensed and insured?

Yes. Every RN and LPN on our team is registered with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives, in good standing, and covered by professional liability insurance. We verify licensure before every assignment.

How quickly can a nurse visit at home?

Most non-urgent visits start within 24 to 48 hours. For hospital discharges with active wounds or IV therapy, we often arrange same-day or next-day visits so the medical plan continues without a gap.

Can your nurses do IV therapy and injections at home?

Yes. We perform IV antibiotic infusions, IV hydration, and a wide range of injections including B12, insulin, anticoagulants, and prescribed antibiotics. The full procedure is documented and shared with your physician after every visit.

Will the nurse coordinate with our doctor and pharmacy?

Yes. After every visit the nurse documents findings, flags any concerns, and communicates directly with your physician and pharmacy. If something is changing (a wound is worsening, a side effect appears, a refill is needed), it is handled the same day.

How much does home nursing cost?

Pricing depends on whether an RN or LPN is required, the complexity of the visit, and the time of day. Many extended health plans, long-term care insurance, ICBC and WorkSafeBC claims, and Veterans Affairs Canada cover home nursing in full or in part. We provide a written quote before any visit.

Can nursing be combined with personal care or live-in care?

Yes, and it commonly is. Many clients receive personal care or live-in support most of the day, with a nurse visiting once or twice daily for clinical tasks. We coordinate the schedule so the family is not juggling multiple providers.

Where in BC do you provide home nursing?
