Who qualifies

Understanding VAC Home Care Benefits

VAC eligibility is broader than most veterans realize. The most common paths are these.

Service-Related Disability

Veterans with a disability or condition caused or worsened by service.

Modern Veterans

Canadian Armed Forces veterans and RCMP members with service-related needs.

Traditional Veterans

World War II and Korean War veterans may qualify for specific VAC programs.

Surviving Spouses

Spouses and common-law partners of deceased veterans may be eligible.

If you are not sure whether you qualify, call us. Many veterans qualify under conditions they did not realize were service-related.

Veteran Affairs Home Care: Frequently Asked Questions

Plain answers about VAC coverage, eligibility, and how care actually starts.

Does Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) cover home care?

Yes. VAC covers home care for eligible veterans through programs like the Veterans Independence Program (VIP) and the Treatment Benefits program. Coverage typically includes personal care, home support, respite, and nursing for service-related conditions.

Who is eligible for VAC home care benefits?

Eligibility includes Canadian Armed Forces veterans, RCMP members, traditional war service veterans, and in some cases their surviving spouses or common-law partners. Eligibility usually depends on service-related health conditions and an assessed need for care.

Are you a VAC-approved home care provider?

Yes. We are an approved home care provider working with VAC and we bill VAC directly for covered services. Veterans receive care without paying out of pocket and without dealing with reimbursement paperwork themselves.

How do I apply for VAC home care benefits?

Most applications go through your VAC case manager or the VAC My Account portal. We help you start the process, complete the paperwork, gather medical documentation, and follow up. If you do not have a case manager yet, we help you get connected.

How long does VAC approval take?

It varies. Straightforward requests can be approved in a few weeks. Complex cases tied to service-related disability assessments can take longer. While approval is in progress, we can often start care privately and transition to VAC billing once approved.

What if I am not sure my condition is service-related?

Reach out anyway. Many veterans qualify under conditions they did not realize were service-related, including hearing loss, mobility issues, and PTSD. We can help you start a Disability Benefits application if it has not been filed.

Are caregivers trained for military culture and PTSD?

Yes. Caregivers assigned to veterans receive additional orientation in military culture, trauma-informed care, and the specific challenges veterans face. We choose caregivers thoughtfully so the fit feels right from the first visit.

Can the surviving spouse of a veteran receive home care through VAC?

In some cases, yes. The Veterans Independence Program can extend to surviving spouses or common-law partners under specific conditions. We can review the situation with you and help submit an application if applicable.

How do I get started?

Call +1 (236) 499-9919 or request a confidential assessment online. A coordinator with VAC experience will speak with you the same day, review your file, and outline the next steps.
